Modern English Countryside

While the British-born husband requested roof lines, agrarian forms, and exterior and interior stone reflecting English country-house architecture, his dynamic wife—a mom, art collector, animal rescuer, and retired financial whiz from North Minneapolis—desired a modern legacy home so comfortable family and friends would never want to leave. Collaborating closely with the client, Ruth softened the interior spaces with an Italian plaster fireplace surround, blonde wood-slat ceilings, walnut Amish-crafted cabinetry, and white-oak floors. Together, they also selected durable, comfortable, eclectic furnishings—including a friend-made traditional dining table, a large sectional by the fireplace, a modern bench with storage cabinets, and washable rugs. The large windows’ black fenestration adds to the home’s modern aesthetic. The client’s colorful art collection enlivens the spaces. A powder room abloom with British-style wallcovering, pantry with panoramic views, guest quarters on the lower level, and a sunny pool house decorated in seaside blues complete the home. “This couple worked diligently to create their dream house,” says Ruth, who also collaborated with Strand Design on the project. “This home reflects a sense of easy elegance. Every room speaks to an intentional way of living where home feels both cherished and lived-in. There’s a space for everybody including three spirited dogs and occasional furry guests. It was a thrill to make their bluff-top dream house come true.”
